Achievement U, Inc. is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded in 2011. We focus on helping young people from less advantaged backgrounds thrive, by exposing them to career opportunities and everyday role models who have succeeded.

We are looking for unpaid interns who will help our organization grow meet the needs of the community. In return, you will receive real life experience and guidance as you gain practical skills and add to your resume or portfolio. If you are at least a high school junior and you are serious about your own growth and gaining real world experience while helping students in the community, we will find a way for you to work with us.

Two internship opportunities in creative writing

Middle grade fiction book internship
This internship is for one student in a creative writing program. You will work with the primary author, Lesa Hammond, to write a fiction book that is a part of a series of books called the Thomson Twins. The Thomson Twins series takes the stories of real-live everyday role models and weaves that persons story into a book about two twins going about their day-to-day life in East Oakland, California. These chapter books are written for children between grades 4 6. Each book is approximately 20,000 25,000 words (or 90 pages)
You will practice your skills of creative writing within a structure, have the opportunity to be the co-author of a published book, and gain credits for your resume.

Nonfiction Book Chapter Internship
With this internship, you interview an individual selected as an Everyday Role Model, someone with an inspirational story of overcoming adversity to succeed. You will craft his/her story as if it were told in first person using the voice of the interviewed individual. The book titled They Did It, So Can You will be filled with stories to inspire people to achieve their goals, by telling the story of others who have succeeded. After interviewing a role model, you will take the taped interview and craft a story of approximately 2500 words.

Through this internship you will enhance your skills of interviewing, storytelling and creative writing. You will be given credit as the author of the story and have the opportunity to have your story published.
