Job Description
Shopbop is seeking a mid- to senior-level Java Developer based in Madison, WI. This developer will be a key member of a small software development team responsible for improving application security and automating the management of our infrastructure. The team uses a wide range of modern technologies, including open source software, commercial software, and homegrown applications. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated IT professional to amaze us with his/her existing technical prowess, while at the same time learning new industry-relevant skills on the job.

This position has a primary focus on Java development-most new development work undertaken by this new hire will done in Java. The main thing we''re looking for is demonstrated past success at designing, building, and supporting medium and large-scale Java applications. A secondary focus of this position is automation. While the position won''t be a system administrator, the qualified candidate does need to be comfortable in a Linux environment, which includes working in a shell, addressing basic system issues, and making enhancements to existing scripts.

Key Accountabilities
. Develop new Java applications to solve medium complexity security and automation problems. For example, you might create a web interface backed by Active Directory to manage permissions, develop innovative solutions to data encryption challenges, or implement GUIs to replace inconvenient configuration systems.
. Mentor other team members in Java and related technologies such as the Spring framework. Other team members will look to you as an expert in object oriented design and Java development.
. Build expertise in infrastructure, system automation, and cloud computing technologies. You''ll encounter virtualized Linux systems, servers such as Apache and Tomcat, and scripting languages such as Perl and shell.
. Gain an understanding of the systems/services owned by the team. You will become the subject matter expert for some of these systems/services and regularly interact with our internal customers, such as website developers and system administrators.
Basic Qualifications
. Java (advanced- to expert-level development and design skills).
. Linux/Unix skills (comfortable working in a shell and addressing basic issues).
. One or more Unix scripting languages: Perl, shell, ruby, python, PHP, etc.
. Bachelor''s degree in computer science or related field.
Preferred Qualifications
. Web and application servers (Tomcat, Apache, etc.).
. Java frameworks or technologies (Spring, Spring Security, Struts, Junit, Mockito, etc.).
. Web client languages such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, and AJAX.
. SQL with relational databases such as Oracle, Microsoft SQL server, and MySQL.
. Automation frameworks such as puppet, chef, and cfengine.
. PKI with GNUPG, OpenSSL, SSH, etc.
. Formats and protocols such as JSON, XML, SOAP, REST.
. Cloud computing, in particular Amazon Web Services (AWS).
. Virtualization platforms such as VMware.
. Network infrastructure such as firewalls, load balancers, and proxies.
. TCP/IP and protocols such as HTTP/HTTPS.
