The Director Statistical Scientist within the Statistics and Programming Section provides highly-experienced strategic statistical support, management and leadership to a group of statisticians in the support of Design and Interpretation teams, Clinical Project teams (CPT), Global Product teams (GPT) and TAs, specialist areas (e.g. clinical pharmacology and DMPK, clinical discovery interface, health economics, patient safety), in the creation, execution, management and defence of clinical development programmes and regulatory submissions; risk and issues management; decision support; statistical and quantitative decision processes and tools; and analysis methods. The Director is responsible for the professional development of their group of direct reports.  Serving as a member of the Statistics and Programming leadership team, actively participate in leading the development of the Statistics and Programming section to enable high quality scientific and statistical contributions to and leadership of AZ product development.   Accountabilities/Responsibilities:
* To lead, manage and develop a group of statisticians:
- To share and interpret the Statistics and Programming vision and objectives to their group of direct reports
- To proactively address the recruitment pipeline, planning for future needs and effectively and efficiently recruiting staff when necessary 
- To set and agree personal objectives with their group of direct reports ensuring a clear line of sight between individual objectives and Business/Clinical/Section/project objectives/vision, that are SMART and appropriately stretching
- To ensure statistical standards, regulatory compliance and SHE standards are met by their group of direct reports
- To develop and agree individual development plans with their group of direct reports
- To carry out performance management activities with their group of direct reports
- To motivate and reward their group appropriately
- To manage the talent within their group and across the section, including identifying appropriate opportunities for staff, developing an effective succession plan and discussing career options with their group   * To actively participate in leading the development of the Statistics and Programming section; to provide leadership and direction to  improvement projects/activities/initiatives to increase the global capability of Statistics and Programming in conjunction with other leadership team members:
- To cascade business priorities and vision in a way that staff are able to translate into their role
- To contribute to the development of the overall Global Statistics and Programming vision and plan
- Provide input to Statistics and Programming strategies and lead implementation (globally or locally) of agreed components of strategies
- Ensure adoption of globally agreed strategies
- To provide expert statistical and scientific leadership to improvement activities and projects to enable Statistics and Programming to develop globally 
- To proactively drive the development and implementation of best statistical practice across the group increasing the overall scientific contribution, quality, effectiveness and efficiency of staff 
- To ensure the right tools and equipment are available to enable the section to develop and operate optimally -- awareness of global improvement activities, providing recommendations for new activities, development of new tools and processes.
* To ensure drug projects are successfully delivered:-
- To provide statistical and scientific leadership to clinical projects in conjunction with members of the drug project team
- To provide scientific and statistical expertise, coaching, and advice to statisticians in project teams
o To work effectively with GPS and CPT to understand the current and future resource demands and to enable the global lead to act decisively regarding short term project needs 
- To ensure projects are effectively and proactively resourced with the right skill levels
- To plan for longer term project resource requirements that benefit the drug projects as well as the assigned individuals   Skills and Capabilities

Minimum Requirements -- Education and Experience
* MSc (Masters) or PhD in statistics (or closely related discipline) with at least 10 years of broad experience in the pharmaceutical or a related industry/field
* Comprehensive knowledge of clinical drug development process
* Experience with compiling regulatory documents/submissions and interacting with regulatory authorities
* Extensive experience in clinical data analysis using a variety of designs and statistical techniques, exposure to different data types and issues, experience with multiple phases of clinical development, and/or experience with drug development in several different therapeutic areas
* Experience providing input to drug development and commercialisation strategies
* Willingness to travel domestically and occasionally internationally   Desirable
* An understanding of the therapeutic areas related to AstraZeneca's products and disease-area strategy
