PURPOSE

To serve as a key focal point for lease and EP contract administration for the team in the Assigned Production Unit(s) for North American Shale Production Division providing full scope and oversight of EP petroleum leases, agreements, minerals and land contracts including set up and maintenance.

Set up and maintenance includes research, analysis, interpretation, data entry into land systems, reporting for land and finance, lease and contract review, updates and support of the lease/agreement/contact maintenance (preservation of asset) payment terms and other obligations for entire EP lifecycle.

Individual contributor role to ensure BHPB's rights are protected, contractual obligations are met, and information is accurately captured and appropriately communicated within the organization.
ACCOUNTABILITIES

Serve as subject matter expert to direct reports, land department, technical teams and management on Lease Administration and land contract related topics.

Assist Supervisor and Manager with training less experienced staff to analyse and interpret basic, intermediate to complex EP leases and contracts to accurately set up payment and obligation records for all properties within the geographical area assigned. (Senior and Staff only)

Analyse and interpret intermediate to complex lease, mineral ownerships, EP contracts and title documents to calculate and pay obligations including shut-ins, along with other non payment related obligations to ensure preservation of the asset. (Advanced for Senior and Staff)

Independently set up and maintain lease and EP contract obligation records to ensure rental payments made to private, corporate, and government mineral owners are in compliance with all applicable laws, statutes, regulations, and contracts.

Learn and refresh knowledge on applicable laws, statutes and industry standards related to leasing, contracts and mineral ownership in the geographical area assigned.

Internally interface to build and maintain effective working relationships with Land and Technical Asset/Organization and other functional departments regarding lease set up and asset maintenance issues. Externally interface with mineral owners, partners, government agencies and industry associations regarding EP contract, minerals and lease issues.

Recognize and develop solutions for non-routine issues, including operated and non-operated ventures, analyse and work on 3rdparty and forced pooled interests. (Advanced for Senior and Staff)

Stay current with land systems technology and use to improve Land systems and work process to increase productivity and reduce land related operating costs.

Contribute to evaluation and constant improvement of key work processes to improve efficiency and reduce costs. (Advanced for Senior and Staff)

Provide support and commercial subject matter expertise to BHPB Technical staff/teams regarding lease and contract issues and their impact to the business. (Advanced for Senior and Staff)

Generate business and regulatory reports for compliance to assist land and technical teams in analysis and decision-making.

Assist with testing system enhancements/upgrades, and deployment training.

In conjunction with the Land team work with third party land and mineral owners to effectively resolve EP contract disputes or issues.

Assist Business Development with due diligence and acquisition evaluation related to lease, EP contracts and mineral ownership matters

Maintaining an external network, including participation and involvement in trade associations and industry benchmarking efforts. (Senior and Staff only)
SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Will be required to travel away from the local office base for projects and initiatives and participate in conference calls to accommodate other time zones (outside normal business day).
AUTHORITY AND WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

Has a direct functional reporting relationship with the Manager of Land Administration.

Internal Cross Functional relationships within the North America Shale Production Division (PU Land Teams, Legal, Tax, GIS, Finance, etc.).

External counterpart relationships with joint venture partners and royalty & land owners.

Direct Reports will include Lease Analysts, Lease Technicians and Administration staff as needed to support the business.

Specific Authorities are derived from the BHP Billiton Petroleum Approval Framework. The position has obligations to comply with relevant company policies and procedures.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

Four-year university accredited degree or higher with major in Law, Energy/Petroleum Management or Business related Degree.

Continuing education in Land related subjects.

Experience & Qualifications (Expertise/Skills):

Recent and direct EP commercial experience with an overall commercial understanding of the full life cycle of the EP business (exploration, development and production). (3 years minimum for Senior & 5 for Staff)

Strong communication, organizational and inter-personal, relationship skills.

Some project or team leadership experience preferred for Senior and Staff levels.

Intermediate knowledge of Lease, Agreement, Land Contract and Royalty Management software. (Advanced required for Senior and Staff levels)

Knowledge of document management process and systems.

High level of written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work independently and in a team-based environment.

Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

State specific and Federal onshore lease, agreement and land contract experienced preferred. (Advanced required for Senior and Staff levels)

Intermediate knowledge of Lease, Contract and Royalty Management software. (Advanced required for Senior and Staff levels)

Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Able to effectively interface with multi-disciplines on a land related topics.

Sound problem solving skills.
