Req ID 41183BR Job category Engineering Sub-category Mechanical Engineering Countries (State/Region) United States - Texas Location Houston Role synopsis The Biofuels Project, Engineering and Operations Support (PE&O) function is accountable for the leadership, guidance and assurance related to the delivery of projects, engineering, procurement, and operations for the Biofuels regional businesses and Joint Ventures. The goal is to continuously improve the process safety, people capability and bottom line value for Biofuels. There is a need to develop processes and standards for the business which provide assurance on implementation of mandatory engineering, project, and operational practices under the Operating Management System (OMS) across Biofuels and its JVs. To do this requires subject matter experts (SMEs) who are competent, experienced engineers, project managers and operations specialists with specific discipline expertise reporting to the Vice President of PE&O. The primary role is to lead in their domain of expertise the safe and consistent development and application of codes, standards and good engineering/projects/operating practices which satisfy the Biofuels OMS requirements. This must be done within the context of the risk management that is appropriate for the Biofuels industry. The SMEs are responsible for the training and strengthening of the required competencies of embedded engineers, projects and operations staff. For the Mechanical SME this would include: Providing input and assurance on the development and implementation of discipline–related Integrity Management (IM) and Operating Management System (OMS) requirements within the Biofuels Business Units (BUs). Leading the capability development and Knowledge Management (KM) within the business of mechanical best practice. Ensuring the operations and maintenance learning’s are incorporated into the Front End Engineering and Design (FEED) activities for projects. Conducting audits and providing coaching, training and on-site support as needed in the development and use of appropriate site tools and systems. This role reports to VP Projects, Engineering & Ops Support, PE&O. Key accountabilities Managing discipline-related actions associated with implementing the Business Annual Engineering Plan. Providing support in identification of technical and engineering risks and recommendations for mitigation at different stages of projects and operations. Providing discipline input into development of minimum Biofuels requirements on technical practices, integrity management and codes and standards for Biofuels asset design, construction and operation. Advising and assisting the business in the development and implementation of Biofuels Site Technical Practices (STPs). Ensuring that projects and operations adhere to the requirements of the BP and Biofuels mandated mechanical-related ETPs and agreed STPs and that all waivers are adequately reviewed, approved and recorded. Ensuring lessons learnt in the Biofuels portfolio are recorded and shared appropriately throughout the organization and incorporated in new designs and, where appropriate for improving risk management, in existing operations. Providing expert assistance (training, due diligence, audits, troubleshooting, technical support) to new and existing personnel as needed to meet business objectives. Providing temporary technical support as needed to new projects and operations to review and provide recommendations for equipment specifications and engineering content. Leading the capability development and KM within Biofuels of mechanical best practice. Reviewing and providing recommendations for technical Management of Change proposals as appropriate. Essential Education Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Essential experience and job requirements Chartered Engineer, Professional Engineer or equivalent. 15 years+ experience in mechanical engineering related projects and operations job roles. Broad and deep understanding of mechanical integrity in operating facilities such as refineries and chemical plants. Understanding of risk identification and mitigation methodologies associated with the implementation of new technology options within projects and operations, including Major Accident Risk (MAR) studies, HAZID, HAZOP, Inherently Safer Design, LOPA, etc. In-depth knowledge and experience of practical application of the relevant engineering codes and standards. Ability to work well with a wide range of disciplines, management, external parties and regulators in an international environment.. Self-motivated and accustomed to being in positions of responsibility and accountability within projects and operations organizations. Ability to perform successfully in an ambiguous environment and effectively prioritize multiple tasks and responsibilities. Ability to achieve the right business outcomes by influence rather than direct authority. Ability to perform successfully in an ambiguous environment. Desirable criteria & qualifications Experience of projects and/or operations associated with the bioprocessing industries such as: - Fermentation Process - Distillation Process - Solids or dust handling - Power generation Ability to comprehend and speak Portuguese and/or Spanish.
