The Retirement Plan Services (RPS) business of Charles Schwab is a 401(k) service provider to approximately 1.5 million company retirement plan participants. By meeting the needs for workplace investing, Schwab RPS assists and supports plan sponsors with effectively delivering retirement investment solutions for their employees. As part of the overall RPS plan sponsor services team, the Retirement Investment Services group is responsible for supporting plan sponsor clients on investment-related matters. Examples of support services include: assisting current clients in the creation and monitoring of plan investment menus, delivering periodic investment reviews, providing capital market updates and commentary on industry topics and trends, as well as other related consulting.
Brief Description of Role:
The two primary responsibilities for this position will be to (1) lead an existing team of 5-10 investment professionals located in Austin and/or multiple locations and (2) provide investment consulting support directly to existing and prospective clients. The position reports to the Retirement Investment Services Department Leader, who in turn reports to the VP of Plan Sponsor Services. The main team leader responsibilities include: effectively communicating and supporting business and departmental goals and initiatives; providing coaching and professional development for direct reports; motivating direct reports to maximize employee engagement; setting goals and holding team members accountable for meeting individual, team and business initiatives; effectively allocating resources across multiple team members; leading, completing and delegating ongoing projects; hiring staff as needed; and, managing certain expenses. The main investment consulting responsibilities include: meeting in-person with investment committee clients and presenting an investment review; conducting in-depth analysis of investment menu designs and presenting best practices for fiduciaries, including the use of investment policy statements; performing mutual fund and portfolio analysis that supports plan sponsor and participant behaviors; providing commentary on defined contribution plan industry investment topics and trends; and, providing investment-related sales support in a team selling environment. Additional responsibilities include representing Schwab at industry conferences. Key internal partnerships include client relationship managers, client services managers, sales professionals, business acceptance colleagues, and other members of the plan sponsor services department. The position requires approximately 40-50% travel.
* Proven history (4-8 years) and demonstrated experience in building and leading teams and executing business initiatives is required
* Bachelors degree or higher required
* MBA/CFA/CFP and or other industry designations highly preferred
* Series 7 required
* 10+ years of industry experience required, 8+ years of investment-related experience preferred
* 8-10 years of defined contribution/401k experience highly preferred
* Experience with ERISA and other retirement plan dynamics is preferred
* Strong knowledge of the financial markets, macro economic factors, risk/return fundamentals, and portfolio theory
* Effective oral and written communication skills; demonstrated history of in-person client interactions
* Effective consultative selling skills
* Ability to interact with high-level executives, management, sales, consultants and mutual fund industry representatives
* Experience presenting at industry conferences
* The position requires approximately 40-50% travel.
