The Massachusetts Hospital School is one of four public health hospitals owned and operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. The Massachusetts Hospital School (MHS) is the primary provider of pediatric inpatient and outpatient services for the Department of Public Health. The MHS provides physically challenged children and young adults with a supportive and challenging adaptive learning program that combines the disciplines of medicine, education, recreation and rehabilitation. MHS is a fully Joint Commission accredited, 120-bed facility located on 186 acres in Canton, MA.

The Incumbent of this position will provide nursing care to patient; such as taking and charting vital signs, applying and changing surgical dressings, administering medications, monitoring fluid intake and output. Provide for the daily nursing care needs of patients by giving baths, back rubs, feedings, grooming, skin care, and treatments. Responds to emergency situations and initiates emergency medical procedures; administers respiratory treatments, tube feedings and monitors intravenous feedings. Participate in the nursing process to formulate a plan of care, records and evaluates the patient response to interventions according to the plan of care.
In collaboration with the Charge Nurse/Supervisor, communicates with patient�s family to elicit accurate and timely information to provide safe patient care. Participate in development of the plan of care with patient/family involvement.
Communications with other team members concerning changes in patient condition to promote continuity of patient care.
Provides effective communication of information to Charge Nurse, peers, unit staff and supervisors.
Completes clinical documentation. (Shift Notes, Monthly Notes, Enablers, ADL Sheets), all paperwork is completed according to departmental guidelines, clinical practice/standards, and hospital policies.
Implements the principles of infection control and standard precautions in the delivery of patient care.
Assist in identifying and reducing the risks of endemic (common cause) and nosocomial (special cause) infections in patients and health car workers.
Performs related duties such as maintaining records and files, retrieving and transporting equipment, supplies, materials and laboratory specimens, transferring patients/students to and from various areas. Ability to lift and carry heavy objects or persons. Perform job-related work as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications:
MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must have at least one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, paraprofessional experience in the field of nursing as a licensed practical nurse.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a current and valid license as a practical nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of nursing practices and procedures relative to pediatrics.
Knowledge of human anatomy.
Knowledge of the techniques followed in the collection of blood and urine samples from patients for diagnostic purposes
Cooperative attitude to effect positive impact on service delivery, adaptability to change, flexibility to perform special duties.
