This position is funded from the Commonwealth's annual operating budget.Duties:
Performs direct hands-on nursing care using established hospital policies and procedures to ensure a consistent approach to patient care.

Assesses and records the patient?s physical status upon admission and thereafter, using Western Massachusetts Hospital Nursing Assessment forms to identify patient problems.

Develops and maintains an up-to-date written plan of care for each patient using nursing diagnosis to identify patient problems/needs, care to be given, patient goals and which team is responsible for each element of care.

Documents changes in the patient?s condition and care rendered according to established nursing service guidelines.

Performs treatments, procedures, routines and therapies in accordance with nursing care plan, physician orders and established policies and procedures to provide safe effective care to patients.

Instructs unit personnel in nursing techniques, procedures and equipment to ensure staff are prepared to perform their respective job duties.

Participates and takes actions that are directed by nursing and hospital-wide Quality Assurance activities.

Participates in EPRS evaluations by keeping supervisors informed of staff performance through consultation and documentation.

Establishes and maintains therapeutic relationships with patients, families and other members of the care team in order to enhance continuity of patient care.

Participates in control and maintenance of equipment in conjunction with the unit supervisor to maintain optimal functioning.

Maintains personal and professional growth by attending inservices, keeping current with contemporary nursing practice and participation on hospital committees.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LEVELS IN SERIES: Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing . *

*Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination. Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.
