Director Train Accident Prevention-040433  Description  

Job Summary:

Leads and manages the system train accident prevention and investigation process (TAP). Works closely with field officers within all departments in oversight of the TAP process. Presents TAP training to field officers and other internal and external customers. Is the primary liaison between CSX and the National Transportation Safety board (NTSB) and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).  Also the principle expert for the CSX legal and claims departments in matters of investigations related to train incidents.   


Primary Activities and Responsibilities:

  • TAP training on the Divisions, REDI and off-site.

  • Working with Division TAP teams in fact gathering, correct analysis and cause finding to drive prevention.

  • Working with and assisting reporting managers to assure accuracy in reporting.

  • Following up on NTSB and/or FRA investigations.

  • Following up on other on-going projects with others within CSX.

  • Preparing information and analysis to CSX legal department.

  • Reviewing/updating training manuals and conference calls with the Association of American Railroads (AAR) to benchmark with other Class 1's.  

  • Miscellaneous activities as assigned by manager.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associates degree from an accredited institution required in General Studies or related major field of study 
  • 5 or more years of supervisory experience required in Operations

Equivalent Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma/GED required in General studies or related major field of study
  • 10 or more years of supervisory experience required in Operations and demonstrated expertise in train accident investigation, analysis and prevention.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of FRA CFR 49 with emphasis on parts 213, 215, 225, 229, 231, 232, 233 and 237.

  • Knowledge of AAR interchange rules.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with senior leadership/executive audiences.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with field officers at any level.

  • Strong analytical skills.

Job Requirements:

  • 50% travel required.

  • Wear protective equipment such as welding shields, hard hat, hearing protection, steel-toe boots, work boots, safety vest, face shield and safety glasses.

  • Work hours include rotating on-call responsibilities which may be on weekends or outside standard working hours.

  • Need to be available to report to work with two-hour advance notice.

  • The applicant selected for this position may be required to successfully complete a background check and physical including a drug test.  Passing results must be received prior to start date in new position.


Environmental Conditions:

  • Work outside in all weather conditions.

  • Work at elevated heights, in certain instances in excess of 100 feet.
