Senior Safety Analyst (ODASD – Readiness)

Job Description:

Provide Senior Safety Analyst expertise to the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Automatic Collision Avoidance Technologies (ACAT) Fighter Risk Reduction Program (FRRP) for the Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Readiness (ODASD – Readiness), Pentagon, Virginia.

Essential Job Functions:

Provide independent safety analysis; linkage between technological change and ODASD requirements; and represent FRRP and ODASD interests at TIMs and Defense Safety Oversight Council (DSOC) forums, to develop and transition technology for fighter aircraft safety.

Provide subject matter expertise to ACAT FRRP for business case and return on investment analyses associated with hybrid flight control computer technology (Hy-Tech), analog and digital Automatic Ground.

Collision Avoidance Systems (Auto GCAS), and Automatic Air Collision Avoidance System (Auto ACAS) for applications in USAF fighter and attack weapon systems.

Provide subject matter expertise for technology requirements with Air Combat Command (ACC), and OSD AT&L, for Hy-Tech, analog and digital Auto GCAS, and Auto ACAS resulting in technology transition to USAF inventory.

Participate in technical and programmatic interchanges, telecommunications, symposiums and workshops associated with ACAT FRRP, and participate in milestone reviews, and TIMs.

Provide leadership and oversight of activities supporting the DSOC efforts and projects.

Assist the Director, Operational Readiness & Safety (OR&S), in DSOC Executive Secretary role.

Participate in the review of all DSOC aviation safety related actions, initiatives, trends and recommended improvements to Department policies and programs.

Analyze readiness and aviation mishap metrics, reports and studies.

Collect and manage follow-on actions until completion.

Ensure assessments and supporting metrics are sound and provide a useful decision basis.

Collect and analyze aviation mishap reduction initiatives.

Promote mishap reduction goals and evaluate return of investment, justifications, and defensibility of initiatives.

Assist the Chair, Aviation Safety Improvement Task Force in aviation safety initiatives.

Prepare presentations for the Director, OR&S which may include testimony for Congress.

Analyze Congressional Authorization/Appropriation and DoD Program Budget cycle events.

Assist in planning, execution and monitoring of aviation readiness and safety activities.

Required Skills:

Due to the sensitivity of customer related requirements, U.S. Citizenship is required.

Bachelor Degree and 15 years of total experience and 8 years of safety systems support (Government or industry) experience (Master’s degree relevant to the work performance may be substituted for 3 years of experience).

Exceptional cooperative and communication (verbal and written) skills to interface with technical and non-technical personnel and senior military and civilian officials.

Fighter or attack aircrew experience; a solid knowledge of aircraft safety systems and programs.

Microsoft systems expertise; MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MS Project, and Outlook.

Secret security clearance required.

Ability to travel.

Desired Skills:

Experience with OSD (particularly Director of Operational Readiness and Safety) is a big plus.
