Responsibilities
Responsibilities

The Discovery Chemistry Research & Technology division of Lilly Research Laboratories supports small molecule drug discovery efforts from target identification though clinical candidate selection. Utilizing contemporary concepts in state-of-the-art medicinal chemistry strategies, the chemistry division is responsible for the design and synthesis of molecules which seek to optimize biological activity and ADME/toxicology properties. We are seeking recent B.S./M.S. graduates in the area of synthetic organic chemistry. Qualified individuals will be technically independent in the setting up and execution of organic reactions, as well as the purification, characterization and identification of products. Strong communication skills are essential.

Key Objectives/Deliverables:

Perform Compound Synthesis, Purification and Characterization under the direction of senior scientific staff:

o Independently set up and execute a variety of organic chemistry reactions, including those with air sensitive and hygroscopic reagents.
o Perform routine purification of synthetic intermediates and final products utilizing techniques such as TLC, HPLC, flash chromatography and other related methods.
o Characterize reaction products by NMR, MS and other routine methods.
o Rigorously document laboratory experimentation and employ safe laboratory practices.
o Design and execute multi-step synthetic routes towards targeted compounds.

Participate in an integrated, multi-disciplinary, drug discovery research team:

o Actively contribute to a high quality research laboratory.
o Integrate emerging computational design technologies, automation chemistry, and biophysical methods (eg. TDF, SPR, X-ray) into drug discovery.
o Demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills.
Requirements
Basic Qualifications:

• B.S. in Organic Chemistry with 2-5 years industrial experience in a synthetic organic or medicinal chemistry setting or M.S. in Organic/Medicinal Chemistry with 0-3 years experience in a synthetic or medicinal chemistry setting.
• Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to be employed in the United States. Eli Lilly and Company does not anticipate providing sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H-1B status) for this employment position.
