Serviceability Design Consultant

JOB SUMMARY:

Competently provides consultative support to development engineering on the design and implementation of Serviceability use cases for products or portfolios. Ability to demonstrate technical excellence with many significant contributions, is recognized by peers as well as all levels of management as being an expert solutions engineer, and has the ability to develop long term serviceability strategies for an organization or product portfolio. May be called upon to lead investigations or give technical advice in area of expertise or related areas. Performs the role of a project leader, or technical solutions leader, on programs or projects of significant scope andcomplexity.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide technical leadership in the design and maintenance of EMC products from a serviceability perspective. This person will champion serviceability initiatives and work with cross-functional teams to improve overall product serviceability by observing current product service trends, as well as participating in new product design reviews. Development of Use case and impact statements will be required to assist with prioritization of serviceability requirements and assist in the cross-functional discussions with the development teams.

Routinely reviews all escalation activity. Develops and drives corrective action activities to eliminate any systemic product defects across all areas of product responsibility.

Creates and delivers training to support personnel in areas that require additional product knowledge with respect to the use and interpretation of diagnostic tools or in areas where the complexity of the product or solution requires additional training and higher levels of general understanding. Also will provide technical guidance and consultation to other members of theteam when required.

Works directly with Development Engineering and Product Management and serves as the Senior Global Services liaison in driving serviceability features within product design. Major contributor or project leader for large and complex sized solutions focused products, including project plans, requirements, strategies, schedules, priorities, overall serviceability system specification, and must significantly contribute to larger and more complex product introductions across multiple organizations.

Drives serviceability functionality and requirements specifications for the entire end to end product lifecycle.

Ability to make difficult technical decisions, identifies the ROI and communicates that into the Engineering community, effectively audits and inspects major programs, evaluates all serviceability options and presents workable recommendations to resolve problems.

Perform and complete all special assignments which require significant technical expertise.

Posesses the ability, when called upon, to develop tools to automate or address specific technical or procedural issues drive GS resource consumption and or adverse customer TCE.

Based upon insights gained during the design and development collaboration phase, drafts additional and/or modified SVT Test Plan elements to be covered during late stage serviceability verification test. Oversees and inspects test results to ensure technical readiness.

Communication and Documentation:

Produces clear and articulate use cases around serviceability requirements and works with engineering during functional and design specifications for assigned projects to ensure incorporation. Evaluates and participates in the review or creation of serviceability functionality or design documents.

Creates White Papers or Technical documents to help improve the general understanding of X-ability within the Development Organization or User community.

Capable of developing and presenting clear, concise reports of project status or technical issues to executive leadership/management or other engineering staff as well as providing guidance on potential manpower and resource requirements.

Provides technical documentation and strategic overviews to establish the visionary conceptions for the next generation product to exceed industry and establish the competitiveadvantage for EMC.

Creates ‘Business Case’ or ROI analyses of requirements and their expected impacts, benefits and risks and engages with GS and IIG (Development) leadership to drive mutually agreed, business oriented outcomes.

Range of Influence:

Has technical influence and makes decisions related to large and complex sized programs and products; responsible for the serviceability features within the high level design.

Able to influence desired outcomes by demonstrating Subject Matter Expert competence in the technical subject matter, business case impacts and empirical evidence assembled during detailed analysis.

Investigates assigned areas of emerging technology and develops sound understanding of those technologies. Ability to easily translate that knowledge into serviceability solutions that will improve the overall efficiency of the Support and or Engineering community. Publish and disseminate pertinent technical information to the engineering and support personnel on emerging technologies or products. Able to develop feasibility “proof of concept” prototypes for evaluation purposes.

Effectively co-ordinate support activities across department boundaries. For example, might work with a product manager or development engineering manager/staff to provide engineering resource assistance.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Strong technical knowledge of EMC products and the cloud/storage infrastructure marketplace. Requires a system level view of the products and how they interact at a high level.

In-depth knowledge of EMC business systems, including CSI and SYR, as well as the business processes used to populate them.

Use case and requirements writing of technical and serviceability concepts to develop product SRD’s

Strong communication and personal relationship skills. This is a cross-functional matrix role, ability to reach out to various teams and get them to work together to solve common problems. Possess excellentwritten and oral communication skills. Able to make high level presentations outside the group to all levels of peers and management. Ability to negotiate and resolve conflicts to ensure timely completion of assigned work or projects. Able to effectively lead and inspire team members in completion of a shared goal, project or objective.

Strong leadership skills are required. This person will be expected to lead and drive cross-functional meetings on a regular basis.

Self-motivated with a passion for solving customer problems, Demonstrated track record of meeting timelines and managing schedules

Should hold EMC Proven certifications in respective products as well as industry certifications within the require disciplines.

It would be beneficial to be a member of Industry wide forums or consortiums on Serviceability.

BS computer science or technical degree or equivalent experience with 7-10 years of related industry experience.

Extensive working knowledge of theory related to areas of expertise and a strong knowledge of computer systems in general. Ability to investigate and incorporate state-of-the-art technology into programs/products. Ability to translate market and product requirements into technical solutions and deliver those solutions.

Ability to analyze and evaluate all levels of the supported subsystems. Work on the most complex problems and issues and develop solutions using technical creativity and ingenuity. Capable of making program level decisions, of a technical nature, based on own research.

Ability to work autonomously; technical judgment is trusted.

Ability to take and prioritize multiple complex projects and problems simultaneously.

Ability to understand, at a systems level, various architectures and applications and to easily translate these into a sound and executable solutions services model.

Working knowledge of the product development process and how to integrate with it in order to drive value to the development teams without adversely impacting efficiency and milestone attainment.
