JOB SUMMARY

· Ensures the timely resolution of medical insurance claims filed with insurance carriers and agencies. Handles billing related activities for assigned medical specialties; ensures appropriate coding to maximize reimbursement of claims. Verifies patient insurance and medicaid coverage for billing purposes. Maintains a comprehensive knowledge of billing requirements for assigned medical specialties.

· Reviews documentation in the medical record and accurately and completely assigns appropriate diagnostic and procedural ICD-9-CM and /or CPT-4 HCPCS codes to the greatest specificity, assigning the most accurate DRG/APG. Abstracts demographic and coding information into the information system accurately and completely. May also include review of SMART software worksheets.

· May prepare physician charges for processing, using ICD-9 and CPT coding procedures. Determines if patient or third party is appropriate payer and posts payments to accounts. Identifies which accounts require immediate follow up and follows established procedures. Maintains required record-keeping and databases. Assists in training other employees on reimbursement related topics. Performs related responsibilities as required.

Required Minimum Education: High School Education or equivalent; Completed course in anatomy and physiology at College level.

Preferred Experience: One of the following: CPC, CSS, RHIT, RHIA. Must have proof of coding certifications through AAPC or AHIMA.

Required Minimum Experience: Two years of experience in medical billing. Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet computer applications.

Required Skills: Computer/data entry experience. Ability to communicate with various members of the healthcare team. Ability to use EXCEL, Word and have basic computer operational knowledge.
