Purpose and Scope


The Software Design Engineer will provide technical support to Ogden plant that comprises of control system requirements for (current and new) software projects. The Software Design Engineer must be knowledgeable in electrical design, experienced in the use of the common Siemens Simatic S7-400 system this includes Ethernet, Device Net, Profibus DP, and HMI’s interface to PLC brands manufactured by Siemens, Allen Bradley. The Software engineer must have experience with PLC programming of GE Fanuc Robotics and applications of SCADA systems. In addition, the Software Design Engineer must have experience in programs design development to support manufacturing in all phases including software validations. The Software Design Engineer will be responsible for providing software support for the manufacturing operational departments as well as special projects or process improvement projects. The Software Design Engineer will work direct with other software engineers as well as providing technical expertise and support to the plant and operational departments to ensure and improve manufacturing processes.



The Software Design Engineer will provide details and implement programs to assist software personnel in pursuit of maintaining current and new software. Develop, test and implement hardware/software technology for the development or improvement of the Ogden plant. The tasks will include SEW AC Drives/Servo Drives and maintaining of automation of existing and new control systems with regard to: software and PLC programming, electrical hardware, design and implementation, documentation of new projects and equipment upgrades of electrical requirements, software and process control.



ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Under the guide and direction of the central engineering manager: understand the goals and contents of central engineering and manufacturing projects, coordinate communications of all efforts for major projects; lead projects with clear objectives and timely deliverables.


Knowledge of Software/Electrical design development is required by the engineering department and understanding various types of programmable controllers. Provide leadership for the software team and establish coverage during and off hours in support of production time schedule. The lead software engineer will manage all activities and maintain current and new software systems. Assist maintenance department in troubleshooting production line problems during off hours.




Assist other departments within the Ogden facility with software programming, design modifications and process improvements.



Software Design Engineer and team lead must oversee software projects to improve operational department’s equipment safety, downtime, profitability, production processes, and production operational needs. Coordinate with Associate Electronic Software Engineers resources to ensure availability of components, equipment and personnel to meet overall project and production time lines. Effectively present current and completed project information by use of a Microsoft projects and action item register and/or power point presentation. Efficiently and correctly respond to questions from management.



Support operational departments, engineers/production in their projects and assist with technical reports.



The Software Engineering Lead will identify a system that requires development and process improvements. The Software Design Engineer must focus on projects that enhance process and improve equipment by reducing downtime. This will include assistance in developing processes for improving machines run rates, compliance and production effectiveness.



Must be able to work independently and be responsible for (his/her) work. The Software Design Engineer must complete projects as assigned by the central engineering department manager. Must be able to prioritize responsibilities and lead software technicians by establishing time lines in order to maintain a balance of support in all projects and execute projects with clear objectives. Provide a monthly report of activities performed on each assignment and track projects and coordinate resource needs.



Maintain good documentation practices for all forms, logs, appendixes, reports, and prepare clear and informative engineering and technical reports with accuracy. Establish and/or revise software validation protocols, write SOP's, drawings, equipment specifications, Engineering Test Reports (ETR) and technical reports. Proficiently perform testing and evaluation of software and produce reports to satisfy software validation requirements for all departments. Need good communication skills, planning skills, problem solving skills and accountability. Support the software validation and optimization of new existing equipment developed from scale-up to commercialization. In addition, the lead must be in compliance with all Installation Qualifications (IQ), Operational Qualifications (OQ), Performance Qualification (PQ), and software development.



The Software Design Engineer must be self-motivated to improve knowledge related to process and software validation techniques by continuous assessment of current publications, standards and regulations.



Develop a thorough understanding of process requirements as it applies to process automation systems. The Software Design Engineer must assure that the SOP and policy compliance throughout the software validation process.



Improve Software Processes/Systems, responsible for optimizing the operations through business process improvements. Primary focus will be on understanding automation engineering processes and procedures and developing means of improving them in compliance with applicable regulations, policies and procedures.



The Software Design Engineer will provide software engineering support and expertise in the areas of equipment design, equipment software specifications, and continuous improvement. This will include testing, debugging malfunctioning machinery and discuss malfunction with maintenance technicians and production supervisors. Diagnose and repair or replace faulty electronic components, such as printed circuit boards and repair mechanical problems if needed.



Provide overall resolution, methods that improves manufacturing and meet plant expectations and further to enhance and reduce the manufacturing downtime. The Software Design Engineer will support all operations in Ogden.


The Software Design Engineer will give support and guidance to software engineers and assist in troubleshooting problems during off hours to minimize downtime. Involve and work directly with engineering staff during installs, commissioning, startup and effectiveness improvement phases of projects to build department ownership, operational training and transfer of knowledge.


Maintain general housekeeping of working area and plant. Follow all Fresenius Policies. Regular attendance and maintaining a good attendance record is an essential function of the job.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Directly work with department lead and Software engineers. The Software Design Engineer carries out leadership work responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE


Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and four years of technical training in Siemens software. Related experience/skilled in logic controller programming. Must have experience in supervising two to four employees.


LANGUAGE SKILLS


Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability and effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Ability to comprehend and apply principles of advanced calculus, modern algebra, and advanced statistical theory. Ability to work with concepts such as limits, rings, quadratic and differential equations, and proofs of theorems.

Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.,) in its most difficult phases. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
