Description
Greenpeace wants to support and train the next generation of environmental activists. That means you!

Kate Finneran, a Greenpeace Semester 2008 alum, went on to work with the Greenpeace Semester team as an intern and fellow, and as a field organizer with Greenpeace. She also worked the Rainforest Action Network. She said this about the Semester:

Going into this program, I thought I would learn about environmental issues and do some campaign work. What I ended up getting out of it was so much more valuable. I now have the skills and the confidence to organize people around a cause, and had learned how to pass those skills on. I also discovered the importance of collective effort, and that we must learn how to unite people in order to tackle the major problems that face the earth today.

The Greenpeace Semester trains students to be active about current environmental issues. Experienced activists train students in a classroom setting, giving them the skills they need to design environmental campaigns and put them into action, back on campus and with professional environmental organizations. These skills are then tested and strengthened when Semester students gain invaluable field experience as they travel to work on the most current Greenpeace campaigns.

Greenpeaces long history of environmental activism provides the inspiration for the Semesters innovative curriculum. Founded in 1971 on principals of grassroots organizing and bearing witness, Greenpeace tackles major environmental issues from unsafe nuclear energy to global climate change. The experience and methods honed as an organization throughout these campaigns are then passed on to Semester participants.

Students participating in the spring and fall programs spend a semester in Washington, DC. The spring and fall Semesters also includes two weeks of traveling field experience. Two shorter, five week programs are offered in the Summer. Summer students learn the basics of organizing and campaign work, and travel for one week in the field.

Tuition for the Semesters spring and fall terms is $4,200. Summer tuition is $2,200. All classes and classroom materials, as well as travel costs, are covered. Semester coordinators work with students to support their fundraising efforts every step of the way.
