SUBSTITUTIONS: General college training may be substituted for the two years of general experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience. College training in medical records may be substituted for the specialized experience on the basis of six semester hours in medical records per thirty overall hours for one year of experience. Job Distinctions: Differs from Health Information Inpatient Coder by lack of responsibility for determining the principal diagnosis for inpatients. Examples of Work: Codes diagnoses and procedures for purposes of standardization, retrieval, and statistical analyses on outpatient records, as well as long term care patient records. Codes diagnoses and procedures for data collection and processing. Collects and processes health information. Inputs data into computerized health information system. Carries out concurrent health record review activities. Abstracts health records for the collecting and processing of statistical data. Maintains departmental coding policies and procedures manual.
