Position/Program Information

Positions allocable to this class work under the supervision of a Head Sewing Worker or other higher level supervisor supervising a group of sewing workers or inmate workers in the sewing or mending of hospital and institutional garments and linens. Positions require a thorough knowledge of proper sewing and mending techniques as they relate to the kinds of alterations and repairs made in an institutional setting, knowledge of fabric layout, and skill in operation of power sewing machines and attachments such as single-needle, double-needle, coverstitch, or overlock, and equipment such as heat stampers and electric cloth cutters.

Essential Job Functions

Supervises the work ofinmate workers engaged in using standard power sewing machine equipment such as the overlock, hemmer, hemstitcher, power machine, and single needle.

Instructs new employees in the manufacturing and mending of institutional garments and linens.

Supervises the assembling and sewing of institutional garments and linens on power sewing machines.

Supervises the inspection and sorting of worn or torn linens and garments and condemns those that cannot be used or mended.

Instructs inmates in the use of power sewing machine, attachments, and methods of making and mending institutional garments and linens while maintaining a safe and productive workflow.

Does power machine sewing as required.

Keeps work, training, and material records and orders supplies.

Supervises the receiving, counting, sorting, stamping and bundling of completed work.

Instructs inmates on the proper use and safety of sewing equipment to prevent accidents to inmates and or employees.

Regularly inspect all machines for faulty or broken parts and fixes and or replaces items as needed to ensure all equipment is working properly.

Regularly oils and cleans sewing machines of dust and lint to ensure all machines are working properly.



Requirements

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS:

Two years' paid experience in the operation of a power sewing machine in an institution or commercial establishment, including experience laying out and cutting yardage.

Acceptable Substitution: Completion of a recognized course in power sewing machine operation for six months of the experience.*

Physical Class

Physical Class III Moderate: Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighting over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

License(s) Required

A valid California ClassC Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.



Special Requirement Information

*In order to receive credit for any course work such as completion of a recognized course in power sewing machine operation, you must include a legible copy of the official transcripts, or official letter from the accredited institution which shows the area of specialization or official certificates with your application at the time of filing .

Accreditation Information

* Accreditation: Accredited institutions are those listed in the publications of regional, national or international accrediting agencies which are accepted by the Department of Human Resources. Publications such as American Universities and Colleges and International Handbook of Universities are acceptable references. Also acceptable, if appropriate, are degrees that have been evaluated and deemed to be equivalent to degrees from United States accredited institutions by an academic credential evaluation agency recognized by The National Association of Credential Evaluation Services or The Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc. (AICE) .

Examination Content

This examination will consist of a performance test on a power sewing machine weighted 100%.

Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the examination in order to be placed on the eligible register.

APPOINTEES MUST BE WILLING TO WORK ANY SHIFT, INCLUDING EVENINGS, NIGHTS, WEEKENDS, AND HOLIDAYS.

SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES MUST COMPLETE A THOROUGH BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION, INCLUDING FINGERPRINT SEARCH. Examples of disqualifying factors include: Any felony convictions; job related misdemeanor convictions; certain serious traffic convictions or patterns of traffic violations (3 moving violations in one year; failure to appear; at fault accidents; suspended license; driving under the influence); poor credit history; poor employment history; substance abuse; anyone on probation.



Vacancy Information

The resulting eligible register for this examination will be used to fill vacancies in theLos Angeles County Sheriff's Department, North County Correctional Facility.

Eligibility Information

The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.

No person may compete for this examination more than once everytwelve (12) months.
