OCCUPATIONAL GROUP: CORRECTIONAL ENFORCEMENT
OCCUPATION: CORRECTIONAL ENFORCEMENT
This is work providing custody, care and control of inmates in a penal or rehabilitative institution and/or residents in a mental health facility in accordance with established regulations and procedures. Also, this is work supervising, investigating, assessing, counseling and monitoring offenders on probation or post prison release supervision.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
Monitors conduct of inmates, according to established policies, regulations, and procedures, to prevent escape or violence.
Takes inmates into custody and escorts to locations within and outside of facility, such as visiting room, courtroom, health facility or airport.
Inspects locks, window bars, grills, doors, and gates at correctional facility, to prevent escape.
Uses weapons, handcuffs, and physical force to maintain discipline and order among inmates.
Searches inmates, cells, and vehicles for weapons, valuables, drugs or other contraband.
Guards facility entrance to screen visitors.
Records information, such as inmate’s identification, charges, and incidences of inmate disturbance.
Serves meals and distributes commissary items to inmates.
Uses investigative and interrogation techniques and arrest procedures.
Collects, analyzes and interprets evidence to write, review and evaluate reports.
Supervises and evaluates offender progress and recommends intensity of supervision.
Assist offenders in security jobs, maintains contacts with business organizations and employment agencies and arranges for employment interviews.
Review case records to determine nature and extent of inmate or offender’s criminal record and current and prospective social problems.
Reviews and evaluates legal and social history and progress of offender or inmate.
Informs offender or inmate of requirements of conditional release, such as office visits, restitution payments, or educational and employment stipulations.
Counsels offender and refers offender to social resources of community or specialized treatment programs.
Provides guidance to inmates or offenders, such as development of vocational and educational plans, self-betterment programs and available social services.
Formulates management plan for each assigned offender or inmate.
Conducts on-going interview with offender and resources associated with offender or inmate and institutional personnel to determine social progress, individual problems, needs, interest, attitude and progress.
Confers with inmate or offender's family to identify needs and problems, and to ensure that family and business are attended to.
Makes recommendations concerning conditional release or institutionalization of offender or inmate. Evaluates risk factors of placing offender in community.
Provides surveillance, supervision and control of offenders.
Represents the department in all revocation hearings for assigned offenders by providing court testimony, information and recommendations to judges regarding offender case and probation or sentence violations.
Coordinates interstate and intrastate transfer cases.
Prepares and maintains case folder for each assigned inmate or offender.
Conducts prehearing or presentencing investigations and testifies in court.
Conducts special investigations.
Conducts warrantless arrests of offenders under specified circumstances to protect the public.
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS
This occupation requires certification in accordance with Chapter 943, Florida Statutes, and completion of the basic recruit training course for Correctional Probation Officers and incumbents must be eligible for, or possess a current employment certificate of compliance issued by the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission.
