OCCUPATION PROFILE JOB FAMILY: HEALTHCARE PRACTITIONERS OCCUPATIONAL GROUP: DIAGNOSING AND TREATMENT PRACTITIONERS, HEALTH OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: DIETITIANS AND NUTRITIONISTS 29-1031 DESCRIPTION This is a Public Health Nutritionist position with the Sarasota County WIC office. This position requires a person who is capable of providing nutrition assessment, diet counseling, and nutrition education to clients; consultation/in-service to other employees, participates in community education programs. This position has a primary work site; however, the employee will work at other locations for training and/or staff relief. This job requires access to transportation. Selected immunizations are a prerequisite for this position (MMWR Vol. 46/No.RR-18). Participation in the direct deposit program within 30 days of employment as mandated per Florida Statute 110. 113, 96-310, Laws of Florida is a requirement in this position. Incumbents may be required to perform emergency duty during or beyond normal work hours or days. Job Specific Duties: I. According to DHM 150-24, the WIC Data System Guide, agency policies, and supervisor’s instructions provides nutrition services to WIC clients. A. Certifies/recertifies women, infants, and children to participate in the WIC Program. B. Provides nutrition assessment and counseling for WIC clients, and documents counseling in client records within 1 working day of the service, using the SOAP format. Develops and implements a nutrition care plan appropriate for each client. C. Selects, develops and evaluates client education materials, including preparing bulletin boards and conducting group instruction in waiting areas. D. Serves a minimum average of 12 clients per day. E. Spends a minimum of 20% of WIC time in nutrition education activities. F. Spends at least 6% percent of WIC time in breastfeeding education activities. G. Uses the WIC data system to facilitate services to WIC clients. II. Provides nutrition services for non-WIC clients. A. Provides nutrition assessment and diet counseling for clients referred by Sarasota County Health Department medical staff B. Develops a nutrition care plan appropriate for each client, and uses the SOAP format to document plan in client's medical records within 2 working days of counseling. C. Provides nutrition in-service to support staff as assigned. III. Follows Personnel Rules and regulations and supervisor’s instructions relating to attendance on the job, observation of lunch and break times, usage of sick leave, annual leave or personal holiday, and all other applicable tasks and behaviors. Completes required documents that show the expenditure of work time and the tasks performed and submits to supervisor as requested IV. Attends professional meetings, conferences, and workshops, follows DOH rules and regulations, and performs other related duties as required according to agency policy and supervisor’s instructions. EXAMPLES OF WORK Develops, documents and implements nutrition care plans based on assessments of nutrition needs and other current health plans, and provides follow up and referral as needed. Consults with health care practitioners to determine nutrition or health needs and diet prescription of patient or client. Provides nutrition assessment, education and counseling to patients and their families in nutrition principles, nutrition care, and food selection and preparation. Plans, organizes, conducts and evaluates training in dietetics, nutrition, food service and/or management and administration. Conducts quality assurance, evaluates nutrition care plans and/or counseling. Plans, conducts, and/or evaluates surveys, studies and research and analyzes findings for practical applications. Develops menus and/or inspects meals served for conformance to prescribed diets and standards of palatability and appearance. Develops or selects curriculum and prepares pamphlets, manuals, visual aids, course outlines, and other materials used in teaching. Writes reports and other publications to document and communicate program activities or research findings. Provides breast feeding promotion, support and/or counseling.
