Responsibilities:

Computer scientist in the Healthcare Research organization who will be working on a state of the art clinical language understanding system for CAC (computer assisted coding) and related applications such as clinical documentation improvement. Major duty is to conduct research on rule-based systems with minimum data annotation effort and also in improving rule-based systems using in-production (feedback) data.

  • The research will focus on creating a state of the art rule-based system for Computer Assisted Coding and other related applications.
  • This includes research into existing and new rule engines, evaluating performance on a large set of rules.
  • There is opportunity for research into automatic rule discovery and learning from labeled and weakly labeled data both during system development and in production, based on user feedback.

Qualifications:

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience conducting research in large corpus-based classification or information retrieval techniques is required. Research in graduate school or post-doctoral position qualifies as experience.
  • In addition to the above, experience doing research in rule engines, rule-based systems including grammar based systems and automatic learning of rules/grammars from data such as Transformation-Based Learning or decision trees is highly desirable.
  • Research experience in using Ontologies or any other knowledge base is desirable.
  • Programming experience in one of these languages is required: JAVA, C++, PERL, Python.
  • Bash/Unix scripting skills are required.

Preferred:

  • Experience working with or knowledge of rules engines such as OPS5, Drools or Ontology editors like Protégé or expert system tools like CLIPS is desirable.
  • Experience in machine learning is desirable.
  • Experience in medical text analytics and/or clinical information retrieval is a definite PLUS.
  • Experience working with UMLS components (MeSH, Specialist etc) and/or SNOMED CT is a definite PLUS.

Education:

M.S. or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computational Linguistics, Electrical Engineering or equivalent
