Minimum Skills/Requirements

High school plus specialized training in the operating room setting. Certification as a scrub technician. One to three years experience preferred. Receives on the job training and competency verification to perform primary functions. Experience scrubbing in an operating room preferably with ophthalmic surgery.

Primary Job Functions

Provide assistance and support to the surgical team by providing instruments and equipment for surgical procedures in the operating room. Helps maintain supply levels of the unit Completes yearly unit and PHS competencies.

•Evaluate and coordinate activities during surgical procedures by anticipating surgeons’ needs and necessary supplies.

•Scrub in and assist surgeons with various types of surgical procedures by maintaining current knowledge of various procedures and supplies.

•Adhere to proper surgical procedures of aseptic technique and safety in the use of instruments and equipment, while assuring the surgical team also adheres to the principles of sterile technique.

•Maintain an accurate count of sponges, needles, and instruments and documents appropriately.

•Anticipates needs by gathering supplies, equipment, and instruments prior to the surgical procedure.

•Complies with sterilization, infection, safety, and hospital policies. Follows all generic structure standards and unit based structure standards.

•Coordinates and maintains supplies. Cleans and stores equipment. Process broken equipment as directed.

•Performs other functions as required.

•Functions as preceptor for orientation, education, and cross training of staff.

•Functions as clinical expert and resource person in assigned sub-specialty team.

•Maintains current knowledge in related field through seminars, workshops, and publication.

•Maintains certification.

•Participates in sub-specialty team meetings.

•Keeps abreast of new technology.

•Performs other functions as required.
