The Prudential Law Department has an opening for a Paralegal to work with the attorneys in the ERISA/Benefits group, which provides legal advice concerning a broad range of ERISA and employee benefit issues. The ERISA/Benefits group provides legal advice on the Company’s own benefit plans, executive compensation, benefits and compensation issues involved in mergers and acquisitions, and ERISA issues involved in the creation, sale, and management of various products and services that the U.S. insurance, annuities, and asset management businesses offer.
The duties of this position will include both long-term established tasks as well as short-term projects that arise from diverse requests for legal support. The candidate must be able to learn the Company’s businesses and the benefit plans that the Company offers, and otherwise become an integral part of the legal team supporting an active institutional client business.
The successful candidate may be required to assist in drafting provisions of summary plan descriptions, plan amendments, client communications and other documents; research and be able to discuss relevant laws, regulations, and case law; support transactional reviews of bond offerings; and coordinate cross-business unit projects. The Paralegal will maintain plan documents; draft meeting minutes, resolutions, and letters of direction; and maintain plan investment contracts and other plan-related documentation. Other general responsibilities may include:
1. Corporate housekeeping for the Company plans’ investment committee;
2. Handling of information requests and other routine legal matters; and
3. Legal research and writing.
The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with ERISA and corporate governance matters including the drafting and maintenance of summary plan descriptions, plan documents, minutes, resolutions, and letters of direction. Experience with defined contribution plans and defined benefit plans is desirable. The candidate must have experience in using Westlaw to perform legal research, to the point that, when presented with a legal issue, he or she can independently and thoroughly research the issue, and analyze, organize and summarize the data into a well-written legal memorandum.
