Req Number: sial-00013995 Location(s): Miamisburg, Ohio PURPOSE OF THE POSITION Produce chemicals, runs advanced and complex assays and interprets analytical results while requiring minimal supervision. Required to continuously seeking to improve procedures and processes cutting costs and/or increase efficiency. Independently comes up with ideas to improve processes through review of chemical literature and ensures others can duplicate results. Investigate and recommend corrective action for assays or instrumentation. Write, validate and train staff in ISO and cGMP procedures. Interact with customers, vendors and others throughout the corporation as required. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Sets up equipment, produces chemicals (existing catalog items, new products, lost suppliers, takeovers or customs) and/or runs analytical tests Ensure quality specifications for final products are met. Investigates root cause of all variances for cGMP products Identify problems, locate source and recommend course of action for stock or in-coming materials that do not meet specifications. Documents results and observations per department guidelines Monitors progress of reactions or analytical tests Reviews stock status, sales or demand and changes priority of work as necessary Investigates and recommends new technology and process improvements, training new chemists, and reviewing procedures Suggest improvements for procedures and tests changes in laboratory Perform library research independently coming up with alternatives for process or procedure improvement. Evaluate, justify and recommend new instrumentation to supervisor Train new chemists and operators on procedures, techniques, and systems Provide assistance to others helping solve problems. May serve on committees to improve department, site or company performance. Committees may focus on safety, inventory, output, costs, etc. Works on improving procedures to cut costs, reduce safety hazards, raise purity or suggest changes to procedure to improve batch-to-batch consistency. Should be able to handle more difficult process improvements than chemists Rewrite production, analytical or ISO procedures following departmental guidelines. Perform technically advanced or complex assays Perform assays accurately, identify problems and limitations of analysis Rewrite procedure within deadlines when required Keep accurate and complete records, prepare written procedures as necessary Complete volume of work to meet departmental productivity and backorder goals Maintain equipment and laboratory and calibrate equipment as necessary Maintain a neat and orderly laboratory and office Stock supplies as required Leading department in supervisor''s absence or leading a small group in production. The time spent on this function may increase beyond 10%. In those cases, the amount of time producing chemicals or improving processes would be reduced May be required to fill in for supervisor, ensuring work continues in their absence. Responsible for actively interacting with members on the floor and helping to resolve issues. May use other supervisors or managers on site to help resolve issues May lead a small group of people across 3 shifts, ensuring clean shift handoffs, work being completed on all shifts. Ensures smooth shift changeovers occur May be responsible for scheduling work, assigning work and ensuring work is completed Monitors problems with personnel, safety or equipment and reports problems to supervisor (especially in those departments running 3 shifts without a supervisor on all shifts) Should help to develop skills of less experienced employees by providing technical assistance and help when necessary Miscellaneous duties and tasks as assigned Exemplary attendance and adherence to schedule Education: BS chemistry Desirable: MS chemistry Experience: Over 5 years, up to 7 years BS degree plus 5 years of experience Over 3 years, up to 5 years MS degree plus 2 years of experience Over 7 years, up to 10 years Equivalent experience required Essential and Critical Skills: Ability to utilize computer for word processing, chemical ordering, and data entry is essential. Effective oral and written communication skills and basic mathematical abilities are required. Demonstrates knowledge of chemistry and is able to use this knowledge to independently solve problems and improve procedures while requiring minimal guidance. Has thorough understanding of department and company quality/operational policies and follows these policies. Highly advantaged knowledge of analytical techniques and chemistry. PC operation including basic knowledge of Legacy, Lotus Notes, Excel, Access and Word.
