Job
Description:

The purpose of the Systems Engineer is to provide planning,
recommendations and be responsible for maintenance and administration of all
in-house applications that support and drive the various business websites. The Systems Engineer is expected to build-out
these environments end-to-end from the application perspective. They will work very closely with the developers
to ensure they have the required infrastructure to deploy and properly
configure the applications. In general,
responsibilities will include any requirements regarding the application-driven
environments, from day to day administration to planning and management as well
as other duties as assigned.

Key
Responsibilities:

* Plan, design, and build robust java application implementations
to support the evolution of the code-base from development, through QA and
performance testing, and eventually into production
* Ensure reliable and solid configuration of each environment
both internally and externally facing
* Analyze user requirements, procedures, and problems to
automate processing or to improve existing processes
* Confer with personnel of business units to analyze and
document current operational procedures, identify problems, and learn specific application
requirements.
* Write detailed description of user needs, program functions,
and steps required to develop or modify application installations and
configurations
* Document in detail all systems and applications as they are
used by the end user
* Provide timelines for specific tasks assigned
* Review computer system capabilities, workflow, and
scheduling limitations to determine if requested application changes are
possible within existing system infrastructure
* Study existing information processing systems to evaluate
effectiveness and develop new systems to improve production or workflow as
required
* Prepare workflow and application flow diagrams that specify
the operations performed by the applications running on systems
* Conduct studies pertaining to development of new information
systems to meet current and projected needs
* Respond to management and senior requests for information
* Keep track of software patches and upgrades and schedule
necessary maintenance to resolve any vulnerability found within the application
core
* Update application and system configuration documentation as
necessary relative to the Application Engineer’s responsibilities.
* Assist developers in resolving work problems related to
project specifications and/or application deployment/configuration
* Prepare time and cost estimates for completing projects
* Coordinate work of others to develop, test, install, and
modify applications.
* Provide end-user support as required
Qualifications:

A minimum of 5 years supporting medium to large scale
production web environments running complex Java-based applications is
required. 3 years working as a lead”
engineer is highly preferred. Candidate
must posses the following skills:

* strong ability to document standards, methods and produce
drawings of systems and applications
* Professional written and verbal communication skills
* Able to perform multiple tasks at a high level
* Able to meet timelines and work under pressure
* Strong analytical/problem solving skills
* Exceptional team work as well as being able to work under
own initiative
* Participation in a 24x7x365 rotational on-call coverage as
part of the proactive, production support role
* At least 5 years hands-on Red Hat Linux experience
* Experience tuning systems for optimal performance is
a plus
* Senior-level experience with Apache 2.x is required
* Senior-level experience with Tomcat 5.x or 6.x is required
* Exceptional scripting skills are mandatory (shell,
perl, python)
* Experience as a Java developer is helpful but not
required
* Senior-level experience tuning and monitoring Java
Virtual Machines
* Demonstrated ability to interpret Java stack traces
* Experience with an Oracle backend database as part
of java application support
* Hands-on experience with performance tuning of java-based
applications a huge plus
