GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES This position collects and processes clinical blood and non-blood specimens and drug screens; dispenses collection instructions to patients, and assists laboratory staff in routine tests used in diagnosis and treatment of disease. TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS Work is performed in a clinical environment. Involves frequent contact with staff, patients, and the public. Contact may involve dealing with angry or upset people. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: (This list may not include all the duties assigned.) (Essential functions are noted below with an asterisk.) 1. *Communicates professionally and effectively with staff, administration, patients, and public. 2. Identifies problems, reports them, and makes recommendations for improvement 3. Attends required meetings and participates on committees as requested. 4. *Maintains patient confidentiality 5. *Processes specimens, collects specimens, enters demographic and test information into the information system and assists laboratory scientists. 6. *Research and resolve missing specimen issues. This position requires a person who will dress and act in a professional manner at all times and in all circumstances. The ability to communicate well is emphasized.
Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS Education:
  • Completion of a phlebotomy certification course.
Certificate/License:
  • State of California Department of Health Services Certified PhlebotomyTechnician I License.
Experience:
  • One year of experience in phlebotomy and medical or laboratory work experience preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of the preparation of blood and body fluid specimens for examination by medical technologists, the containers used and the laboratory tests.
  • Skill in operating a computer, copier, and telephone console, identifying problems and recommending solutions.
  • Ability to make simple mathematical computations, work independently, effectively prioritize tasks, exercise initiative, judgment, and decision making, work effectively as team member, establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, employees and the public.
