The Supervisor is responsible for overseeing all manufacturing related activities in their designated area on their assigned shift. A Supervisor supports from “X-X” hourly team leads and guides them in optimizing available resources in the most efficient and economical manner consistent with standard work procedures, work instructions, quality standards, and safety parameters. The Supervisor ensures Team Leads are maintaining standardized work processes, training team members in proper methods, utilizes BOS, Lean, 5-S, TMS tools to achieve the production objectives established for the team.

- Conducts daily and weekly safety inspection and training to ensure departmental operations and personnel are in compliance with OSHA and corporate safety guidelines.
- Ensure Team Leads are doing the bimonthly review of the safety board with all team members.
- Educate everyone on Accident Policy and Procedure.
- Report all accidents, injuries and/or illnesses and near misses.
- Have your team leader assist in reporting, investigating and countermeasure charting in your area.
- Communicate all accident information personally during communication meetings.
- Create and maintain an accident/countermeasure chart in your area.
- Help Team Leads create a mentally-engaged, physical, and professional safe environment.
- Promote the plant’s safety policies and procedures by adopting the Tenneco safety culture.
- Lead by example in promoting safety practices and policies, including but not limited to, initiating start-of -shift stretches, wearing proper PPE, and holding all team members accountable for wearing theirs; following LOTO procedures; reminding the team about the importance of Hazardous Communication labels (present, correct and legible data) and MSDS information.
- Educate and train all persons of the designed Evacuation Plan. The route to take, the area to rendezvous, and the importance of cooperation and attention.
- Ensure everyone knows the policies proper procedures for exiting the facility.
- Secure the area by confirming designated equipment has been powered down.
- Take roll call at the designated meeting area and report to the proper persons..
- Personally observe team members techniques as they perform job functions.
- Coach team leads on their observation techniques.
- Improve the techniques and methods of the ackward movements in order to minimize physical burdens.
- Set up job rotation within the cell to allow for a variety of functions utilizing different muscle groups.
- Check on team members by visiting the area. Show genuine concern for their well being.
- Collaborate with the EHS coordinator to continuously improve the ergonomics of the work.
- Develop a 5’s plan. Review process with check sheets, mentor Team Leaders to heighten their awareness and educate them on desired standards.
- Evaluate the 5-S condition daily yourself by observing the process area. Coach Team Leads on abnormalities.
- Follow up on any 5-S condition that is not within standard.
- Be sure everything has a place and everything is in it’s place.
- Assist Team Leaders or their assigned designee train the team members in Standardized Work practices and follow up on any concerns that arise, actively listening for team members’ techniques or methods that potentially improve the standardized work.
- Coordinate all training of Standardized Work with operators and follow-up on any concerns that arise.
- Observe that the team members are following standard work. Check 1 or 2 processes daily ensuring all processes are checked each week.
- Lead by example to ensure consistency of standardized work by team leads and all team members.
- Check to confirm the “continuous improvement” of Standardized Work and follow-up to ensure changes are made or abnormalities are resolved.
- Ensure adherence to the ongoing use of the yellow card audit system
- Assist in the training of audit team members in standardized work and ensure the Team Lead completes the training matrix to document all training.
Job Instruction Training:
- Is responsible for ensuring a qualified, well trained workforce.
- Performs checks to ensure Team Leads train using the standardized work Teaching methodology: 1) Prepare the team member; 2) Present the operation to the team member; 3) Allow the team member to try out the operation;, and 4) provide coaching and follow up.
- Monitor the training, coaching and mentoring of traineee, and be a resource to Team Leader.
- Confirm Team Leads validate job breakdown sheets and standardize work processes with the team.
- Assist Team Lead in providing department/new hire orientation as required for replacements.
- Communicate with the next shift any and all issues/concerns resulting from your shift’s operations.
- Provide timely and effective feedback to help team members to strengthen specific skill areas needed to accomplish a task or solve a problem.
- Discuss in team meetings [huddles] information concerning safety, quality, inventory, production schedules, etc and fosters continuous improvement through communication.
- Listen and talk to the team members to get a better sense of their concerns and issues.
- · Assure upward communication of the issues and/or successes of the cell on an as-needed basis.
- Maintain the glass wall in a neat and organized manner.
- Complete required paper work such as production record charts, quality information and logbook for shift-to-shift communication.
- Maintains production records on quantity, quality, work in process and scrap. Provides analysis and reports upon request. Monitors department budget and spending. Assists Operations Manager in preparing annual budget.
- Monitor the hourly production board to ensure team leads are keeping abreast of the current production rate
- Utilizing the weekly production schedule, the incumbent orders supplies and coordinates the set up production of all lines in his/her respective areas.
- Assigns work force to staff lines for optimum production efficiency at an acceptable quality level.
- Plan, coordinate, and supervise the activities of assigned personnel to efficiently and productively meet production schedules and to hold employees accountable for their performance.
- Respond as primary support to team lead calls when needed and to avoid a line stop.
Cell Operations (Product, Equipment, Quality):
- Confer with other key personnel to coordinate activities on the shift.
- Confirm quality of materials and finished goods.
- Interprets specifications, blueprints, and job orders for team members. Establishes or adjusts work procedures to meet production schedules. Recommends measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, and quality of product.
- Supports the team if contacted about product abnormalities. Report the problem upward if not resolved.
- Provide direction to team leads and team members to maintain compliance with process standards.
- Participate in all applicable elements of the ISO 14001 and TS 16949 standards to ensure the plant is continuously prepared for internal and external audits.
- Ensure set-up and operation of equipment in accordance with production requirements, procedures, and policies.
- Back up team leads and provide first response to line problems, document problems, resolve when possible, follow up with resources to assure that the problem is corrected.
- Follow overtime procedure to assign team members to work on weekends and holidays.
- Monitor and record efficiency and downtime for the area assigned to assure cell(s) are running to TAKT time.
- Continuously monitor and manage nonproductive time in the cell (changeover, downtime)
- Confirm defects and suspect material and confer with the Operations Manager to coordinate the appropriate disposition and elimination scrap
- Facilitate the proper completion of scrap documentation.
- Monitor the usage of operating supplies.
Problem Solving / Philosophy:
- Lead actions to countermeasure a problem’s root cause, monitor the results and standardize the changes made to correct the problem.
- Be proactive in resolving problems in the cell, and elevate the need for assistance as necessary.
- “Go see” and observe problems first hand, investigate and ensure an effective understanding of the facts/data.
- Solve problems utilizing the “scientific method.”
- Deepen process learning through rapid low-cost trials/experiments to solve problems.
- Manage and monitor the relationship of downtime, changeovers, and process improvements through BOS as it directly relates to quality, efficiency and scrap.
- Continuously improve safety, quality and productivity through cell BOS brainstorming sessions.
- Mentor the team lead to continuously improve their processes towards True North utilizing Lean principles and BOS processes at the cell and department levels.
- May be designated to attend any relevant meetings in the Operation Managers absence.
- Attend daily scheduling meetings, safety meetings, accident reviews, daily continuous improvement meetings, TVM meetings, AQP meetings, NPIS meetings, 5S presentations.
- Work closely with team leaders, team members and Engineering to assure part specifications are in compliance.
- Manage the workforce in accordance with the handbook or union contract, whichever is applicable.
- Achieve positive employee relations in the department by promptly addressing and resolving all employee concerns. Guides team leads on personnel policy issues.
- Administer annual performance reviews for team leads. (where applicable)
- Develop, support and monitor activities that foster teamwork within the group.
- Coordinate job assignments based on production needs and/or attendance concerns.
- Frequently analyze work balance to eliminate waste.
- Build strategic working relationships to achieve work and team goals.
- Support a positive work environment that is free of harassment, discrimination or other unlawful practices.
- Immediately escalate any unlawful or improper practices to the Operations Manager and or Human Resources.
- Check to be sure required paperwork such as production record charts, quality information and the logbook for shift-to-shift communication is complete.
- Maintains accurate performance, attendance, and personnel records of assigned team members.
- Receive attendance information from Team Leaders, at the beginning of the shift and report attendance status
- Understand and execute the Attendance policy and procedure consistently.
